Ready for school.
Ready for more.
Being ready for school is about much more than knowing letters and numbers. At Lakeview, we help children develop the confidence, independence, relationships and learning dispositions that allow them to approach new experiences with curiosity and a belief in themselves.
READY FOR WHAT COMES NEXT
School readiness begins long before the first day of school.
Being ready for school is about much more than knowing letters and numbers. It is about children developing the confidence, independence, relationships and learning dispositions that help them approach new experiences with curiosity and a belief in themselves.
Confident, capable learners
Through everyday play and meaningful experiences, children learn to make decisions, solve problems, persist when things are challenging and take increasing responsibility for themselves and their belongings.
Communication and connection
Children develop the skills to express their ideas, listen to others, contribute to a group, build friendships and navigate the everyday challenges of learning alongside others.
Foundations for literacy and numeracy
Early literacy and numeracy are woven naturally through children's play — through stories, conversations, drawing, mark-making, counting, measuring, pattern, music, construction and investigation.
A positive transition to school
As children move towards school, we support them to become increasingly confident with change, new expectations and greater independence, while continuing to protect the joy, curiosity and sense of possibility that make early childhood learning so powerful.
LEARNING THROUGH REAL EXPERIENCES
Learning that feels meaningful.
Children build strong foundations for school when learning connects with things that matter to them.
At Lakeview, school readiness develops through real experiences, rich play and intentional teaching. Children might write signs for their games, count materials during construction, measure ingredients, investigate scientific ideas, tell stories, create maps, solve problems with friends or revisit a project over several days.
These experiences allow children to practise important skills in ways that are purposeful, engaging and connected to their world.
MORE THAN ACADEMICS
Preparing for school
without rushing childhood.
We do not believe preparing children for school means turning preschool into school.
Young children learn best when they feel safe, connected, curious and actively involved in their learning. Our educators intentionally extend children's thinking through play, conversation, investigation, everyday routines and thoughtfully planned experiences.
Where explicit teaching is valuable, it is introduced in ways that are developmentally appropriate, responsive and meaningful to the child.
THE YEAR BEFORE SCHOOL
Confidence for
everyday school life.
As children move closer to school, educators support them to develop increasing independence, confidence and responsibility across the many small moments that make up their day.
Independence and responsibility
Caring for belongings, managing everyday routines, developing self-care skills and becoming increasingly confident doing things for themselves.
Learning with others
Participating in groups, listening to others, sharing ideas, developing friendships and learning to negotiate and solve social problems.
Persistence and confidence
Trying new things, working through challenges, asking for help when needed and discovering the satisfaction that comes from perseverance.
Foundations for learning
Developing communication, fine-motor skills, early literacy and mathematical thinking, phonological awareness and name recognition and writing where developmentally appropriate.
CHILDREN'S VOICES
Their ideas belong
in the journey too.
As children move towards school, we make space for their ideas, questions and feelings.
Through conversations, drawings and shared reflection, children tell us what matters to them, what they feel confident about and what they may be wondering about as their next chapter approaches.
Listening carefully helps educators understand each child's perspective and ensures children remain active participants in their own learning and transition.
FOUNDATIONS FOR LEARNING
Literacy, numeracy
and thinking woven
through play.
Early literacy and numeracy are not confined to set lessons. Children encounter literacy when they listen to stories, create their own stories, recognise symbols, draw, make marks, explore letters and write for real purposes.
Mathematical thinking develops as children count, sort, compare, estimate, measure, recognise patterns, explore shape and space, construct and solve everyday problems.
Science, technology, engineering and creative thinking are also embedded throughout our program as children predict, test ideas, design, build, investigate and reflect.
TRANSITION TO SCHOOL
Making the next step feel familiar.
Starting school is a significant transition for children and families. We help children build familiarity and confidence through conversations, stories, role play, shared experiences and opportunities to talk about what school may be like.
Our relationships within the local community, including our connection with Primbee Public School, help children see school as part of the wider world they already belong to.
Educators work alongside families throughout the transition, sharing observations about children's strengths, emerging skills and areas where additional support may be helpful.
FAMILIES AS PARTNERS
Preparing together.
Families know their children best. Throughout the year, we encourage families to share their child's interests, strengths, worries, emerging skills and plans for school.
Knowing each child
Family knowledge helps educators understand each child's experiences, personality, strengths and individual needs.
Sharing progress
Ongoing conversations allow families and educators to share what they are noticing and celebrate children's growing confidence and capabilities.
Supporting individual needs
Where a child may benefit from additional support, early conversations allow families and educators to work together and consider the best way forward.
A shared transition
School readiness is strongest when children, families, educators and schools work together to make the transition feel positive, supported and familiar.
EVERY CHILD'S PATH LOOKS DIFFERENT
Confident. Connected.
Curious. Capable.
Our goal is for each child to leave Lakeview with a strong sense of themselves as a learner — confident to participate, able to communicate, willing to try, connected to others and excited about what comes next.
