At Lakeview, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives are embedded within our everyday learning, helping children develop respect for Country, culture and the histories and knowledge of Australia’s First Nations peoples.
EVERYDAY CONNECTION
Culture is woven into everyday learning.
Our connection to Country is not limited to particular events or celebrations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives are respectfully embedded throughout children's everyday experiences at Lakeview.
Children build their understanding through Acknowledgement of Country, local Dharawal language, stories and books, creative experiences and opportunities to learn with the natural environment.
These experiences encourage children to develop respect, curiosity and an understanding that Aboriginal cultures, histories and knowledge are a living and important part of the community in which they are growing.
LEARNING WITH COUNTRY
Connection grows through the natural world.
Children are supported to notice, explore and care for the environment around them, developing an understanding that Country is something we are connected to and have a responsibility to respect.
Native gardens
Our native and bush tucker gardens create opportunities to learn about plants, seasons and the ways people connect with and care for Country.
Learning outdoors
Time spent exploring our natural environment encourages children to observe, wonder and develop respect for the living world around them.
Caring for Country
Through everyday conversations and experiences, children begin to understand the importance of caring for the land, plants, animals and places we share.
COMMUNITY & RECONCILIATION
Relationships deepen our understanding.
Connections with Aboriginal community members and organisations enrich children's understanding and provide opportunities to learn from the knowledge, experiences and perspectives of others.
National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week provide meaningful opportunities to celebrate, reflect and deepen children's learning.
These experiences are part of an ongoing approach — respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures is embedded throughout the year, rather than reserved for particular dates or events.
