COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
Caring for our world
begins in childhood.
At Lakeview, sustainability is woven into everyday life. Through meaningful experiences, children develop an understanding of the natural world and discover that even small choices can make a difference.
LEARNING THROUGH NATURE
Connection inspires
care.
We believe children are more likely to care for the natural world when they have opportunities to know it, explore it and develop a genuine relationship with it.
Time outdoors, gardening, observing insects and wildlife, growing food and noticing changes in the environment all create opportunities for children to wonder, investigate and develop respect for living things.
Sustainability at Lakeview is therefore not taught as a separate topic. It is experienced through the choices, conversations and routines that form part of everyday life.
SUSTAINABILITY IN PRACTICE
Small actions become
everyday habits.
Children are invited to participate in practical, meaningful ways of caring for their environment.
Growing & gardening
Children help care for gardens and plants, observe growth and change, and experience the connection between healthy soil, food and the natural world.
Composting & food waste
Composting helps children see that food scraps and organic materials can have another purpose rather than simply becoming waste.
Recycling & reusing
Children are encouraged to think about what can be reused, repurposed or recycled and to recognise that materials do not always need to be thrown away.
Open-ended materials
Recycled, natural and loose-part materials are used in creative experiences and play, encouraging children to imagine new possibilities for familiar objects.
Water & energy
Everyday routines provide opportunities to talk about using water thoughtfully, conserving energy and taking responsibility for shared resources.
Reducing single-use items
Where practical, we look for ways to reduce unnecessary single-use products and make more thoughtful choices about the resources we use.
CARING FOR LIVING THINGS
Wonder leads
to responsibility.
The smallest discoveries can inspire some of the richest learning. An insect in the garden, a bird visiting the playground or a new shoot appearing on a plant can lead to questions, conversations and investigation.
Children are encouraged to observe living things with care, consider what they need and understand that our actions can affect the environments we share.
These everyday encounters help nurture empathy, respect and a growing sense of responsibility for the natural world.
CHILDREN AS ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS
Not just learning about
sustainability — living it.
We want children to experience themselves as capable contributors. That means involving them in the everyday decisions and actions that help care for our environment.
Children might help water plants, sort materials for recycling, add scraps to compost, reuse materials in their creations or remind one another to care for resources.
Through participation, children begin to understand that their actions matter and that caring for our world is something we can all be part of.
“When children feel connected to their world, caring for it becomes part of who they are.”
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Small actions.
Lasting understanding.
The habits and attitudes formed in childhood can stay with children for life. By making sustainability visible, practical and meaningful, we hope to nurture children who feel connected to their world and confident in their ability to care for it.
